What to Expect

Stop Here:  Bandabulya Municipal Market, Kuyumcular Sk, Nicosia Cyprus 

Bandabulia was the first covered market built in 1932 during the British period. Located right in the old core of the city on what is now the Green Line, Bandabuliya is the local market in the northern part of Nicosia where you can find fresh fruit and vegetables and a wide range of goods such as books, records, traditional sweets and souvenirs. 

Duration: 30 minutes 

Stop At:  Selimiye Mosque, Nicosia Cyprus

Located in the heart of Nicosia, the Selimiye Mosque, built in the 13th century as Saint Sophia's Cathedral, was once the coronation cathedral of the Lusignan kings. Converted into a mosque in the late 16th century, the cathedral is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic religious architecture on the island. The Cathedral/Mosque is currently closed for renovations. We'll see it from the outside.

Stop Here:  The Arabahmet Mosque, Nicosia Cyprus

The Arabahmet Mosque is located in the Arabahmet district, one of the historical and prestigious districts within the walls. This neighborhood in the western part of the city of Nicosia was the center of culture and economy during the Ottoman and British eras. The residential buildings here reflect the architecture and tradition of that time. Apart from the mosque, this area is now famous for its modern coffee houses, bars and restaurants on the city walls.

Stop At:  Buyuk Han, Nicosia Cyprus

The Büyük Han is the most impressive monument from the Ottoman period in Cyprus. At the end of the tour this is a good place for a drink or lunch. We usually finish our tours here, but for guests who wish to, we offer to take them back to the checkpoint - it's only 5 minutes away

Stop Here:  The Samanbahce Quater, Kaymakam/Mahmut Pasa, Nicosia Cyprus

Located not far from Kyrenia Gate, this small neighborhood of 72 tiny courtyard houses was the first social housing project in Cyprus. All houses were built using traditional building materials according to the traditional Nicosia house plan. This enchanting district, with its long narrow streets full of flowers and sleepy cats, now reflects the way of life in Nicosia at the beginning of the 20th century.

Stop At:  Kyrenia Gate, Ibrahimpasa, Nicosia Cyprus

The city of Nicosia, with its winding and narrow streets, Gothic cathedrals, mosques, courtyard houses and caravanserai, is surrounded by 16th-century walls. This circular city wall with its eleven heart-shaped bastions and three gates became the symbol of Nicosia, the last divided capital of Europe. The Porta del Providotore, known as the Kyrenia Gate, was one of the three entrance gates to the walled city of Nicosia until British times. The Venetians designed the eleven-pointed star-shaped city after the ideal city of the Renaissance.

Passing:  The Mevlevi Tekke Museum, Nicosia Cyprus

Located right next to the Kyrenia Gate, the 17th-century Mevlevi Tekkesi Monastery was one of the most important religious buildings and sites on the island and was the home of the Mevlevi Order, followers of the Sufi mystic and Islamic theologian Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi. Mevlevis are also known as "whirling dervishes".
